Cough Syrup High Popular Among Teens
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration says a mixture of prescription cough syrup and a soft drink is gaining popularity among young people.
The concoction goes by the name of lean, syrup, sizzurp or purple drank.
USA Today reports that most of the names come from rap music.
One survey found that eight-percent of Texas Middle School students say they have taken enough cough syrup to get high.
Doctors say ingesting cough syrup dangerous, because too much codeine, one of the ingredients in cough syrup, can depress the body's central nervous system and stop the heart and lungs.
